Encouraging refugee participation in civic activities is significant toward their integration and belonging in new communities. Programs like Jewish Family Services Volunteer programs provide significant opportunities for refugees to get active in local events that not only facilitate their adjustment but also enrich the whole community. Civic engagement empowers refugees by giving them platforms to share experiences while fostering bonds with others.
Most refugees find moving to a different country an extremely isolating experience, especially as they get accustomed to another social, cultural, and legal system. Civic activities such as volunteering, advocacy, or participation in community events help build the sense of purpose and ownership that most refugees lack in their new environment. Giving back can reduce feelings of helplessness while creating a sense of accomplishment and improving emotional well-being.
Thirdly, civic engagement evolves their skills and knowledge. Refugee volunteering or contributing to their communities' endeavors helps them discover and understand their rights and responsibilities together with the country's political and legal systems. It will help them to live in this new country more efficiently. Furthermore, they will be able to train their language skills, enhance communication, and make new useful contacts, which are important for integration.
Civic involvement also promotes social inclusion: it is good for the refugees and good for the community. It encourages intercultural dialogue, challenging stereotypes and building mutual understanding. Encouraging refugees to participate in local community activities transforms them into active citizens who can integrate barriers and strengthen social bonds.
Refusal of refugees to participate in civic activities does not support their integration but instead creates an unfriendly society. The refugees can develop new skills when volunteering, building relationships, and contributing meaningfully to the new communities they join, resulting in a well-connected and welcoming world.
